I love learning how to draw Sonic so much that I can’t help doodle the little critter any chance I get. Whether I’m on the phone, on a bus, or watching tv, I’ll grab a pen and make doodles of Sonic, Dr. Robotnik, Tails, and the others.

A lot of people would love to know how to draw cartoon characters really well, but they think it’s just too hard or they’re not good enough. I don’t think this is the case, so I want to set the record straight in this article.

If you search online for tips on how to draw cartoon people then sooner or later you will find some of the following advise: -

  • You need to develop a good sense of proportions
  • You need to devote a lot of time for practicing
  • You need to have good imagination
  • You should try to perfect your skill of drawing nice lines and curves
  • You want to have a good eye for colours and shades

I agree that you need to have all these things to be a good artist, but I disagree that you should focus on them too much. As far as I’m concerned, there is something far more important than all of the above put together. My golden rule of learning how to draw Sonic to perfection is this; HAVE FUN!!

Here are my favourite ways to have fun with drawing cartoons:-

  • Draw in a group, club, or in the company of friends.
  • Carry my drawings in a portfolio and take them with me to show friends and relatives all the time.
  • Draw Sonic to music or while a Sonic DVD is playing in the background. That way you can more easily capture a sense of excitement in the drawing.
  • Get some really nice pens and pencils to draw with. (I personally love using magic markers.)
  • Share your drawings on forums and on Facebook groups so that you can make friends with other people with the same interest as you.
  • Buy a really cool comic and copy your favourite drawings as best you can (one of my favourite past times).

So long as you keep having fun, you are much more likely to carry on drawing for years and years. If you aren’t having much fun then you’ll probably give up, or your drawings won’t look as good because you won’t feel as creative.

Sharing the experience of drawing is the key to perfecting the skill of how to draw Sonic.

One of my favourite ways how to draw Sonic is to use my trusty mechanical pencil. Although any sort will do, I think that if you really love drawing, you should also love your pens.

Far and away the best mechanical pencil out there is the “Pentel Graph Gear 1000 0.5″. If treated will care will last for decades and the styling of it is sooo cool – it’s a design classic.

Caricature drawings concentrate on the feature that people notice first about the person. For President Kennedy, it was his hair; the cartoonists always drew that big black upswept black hair. For President Carter, it was that mouthful of huge teeth in a big grin. For President Bush, it was his eyebrows which went upward in the middle of his face instead of at the outer edges. For Obama, they stress his big ears and lips. If you look up these people online, you’ll see those features. Then look up cartoonist’s websites and see how they drew them. If you concentrate on what you notice most about the person, you’ll get there.

Start with reference photo’s. People say you shouldn’t draw from photo’s but when you’re just starting I think it’s beneficial. Pick a simple ones where; the person is looking straight at camera, there is a high contrast and they don’t have any facial hair. Start simple, find the basic shapes and do line drawings. DRAW WHAT YOU SEE. It is paramount in realistic drawing that you forget what you know about an object and draw what you can actually see! Practice until you can do this well.
Then start to add tone to the work. It won’t look 3D until it has tone. Pay special attention to all of the shadows and highlights on faces. If you want a drawing to be really realistic the end result shouldn’t have any lines, except maybe in the hair. There are no lines in real life instead create edges by using different tonal values. Work you way up until you feel confident enough to draw from life.

Nobody like hearing this but practice makes perfect. I’m sure you’re a better artist today than you were a year ago. Just keep at it.

People are one of the hardest things to draw and the best way I know of is just to draw from observation. You’d be amazing at how if you draw something enough, like a hand, or arm, eventually, that muscle memory in you hand kicks in and you can draw a hand without even consciously thinking about what’s supposed to go where. You’re hand just knows. Not to over-use a metaphor but it’s like when you learned to ride a bike. Your brain was overwhelmed with trying to keep everything in mind (balance, right foot, now left foot, look forward…..). Eventually you did it enough to the point where you didn’t have to consciously think of each step involved in riding.

Only practice will make you break out of the style you currently have. I was the same …only doing manga and cartoon-like people. Go on the internet, find a photograph of someone/something you find interesting and draw it as realistically as you can. It’ll take more than one try.

so heres my problem.
i have a friend ho has diabeties; she has to test her blood and have an injection every lunch time etc etc etc… so people think shes disabled or something but she really isn’t.
so yeah, shes really smart and speaks up in class… then goes back to drawing sonic-fan characters, which she is amazing at. shes a brilliant cartoonist.
but now ppl have started to notice, so they keep asking us (cuz i draw too) why we’re always drawing. my answer is always, "cause i’m bored.’ and hers is always the truth, whatever they ask her. i mean, i know you shouldnt be afraid of what people think, but sometimes it makes me cringe how honest she is.
so yh there pretty awful to us.
example 1;
in RE and this girl behind us kept saying "DON’T LOOK AT ME! ugly b*tches… y daii always drawinnn doee?….why r daii talking like chipmunks HA" (cuz we are a bit nuts we kind of talk like alvin&thechipmunks) i turned and gave her a dirty look, because i have some problem, i havent seen anyone about it yet but i’m inhumanly over-protective of friends&family. then she just got more annoyed. this was about 2 months ago or maybe less.
example 2:
the other day a different set of girls sitting behind us in drama. my friend asked the girl behind us 4 a rubber. the Girl sed "yes but don’t give to her, i dnt like her" (aka, me) i turned around and said said, "charming!" they imitated me and cracked up. she said "u knoe 2 be quiet" and i got angry at her arrogance so i said, "i’m only being quiet cuz i cant believe how immature you are" and she was like, ‘i’m immature now? am i?" i ignored her and pretended to talk to my friend, but i felt really shaky and unsafe. those feelings are the ones that make me cry. luckily i didnt. its hard to show you how they actually said it so that it made me feel so bad, but you’ll just have to take my word for it.
example 3:
in D&T(Product design) i was sitting with some people in my class who think i’m alright, since my Friend isnt in the particular class. the teacher asked me a question i 4got the answer to, so i kinda went "uuuuummmm i forgot sorry…" and these horrible girls imiated me so i got annoyed and said "shut up." then i told my teacher the answer.
they were all whispering as if i’d just, like, commited a crime. nowone else in my skl gets offended if u say it. but like i say, they’re spoilt brats, used to being respected even if they’re b*tches to everyone else.
so yh lining up 4 deh next lesson this really irritating girl said to me, "y did uy tell her to shut up? u cant just say that." over and OVER again… lots of girls came over and luckily the lesson started so the teacher shut them up.
i cant think of any other examples right now there have been more times like this.
all my friends know.
i no its a bit of a cliche but i rly cant tell my mum cuz 1)it neva rly helps 2)i don’t tell my mum anything, because it makes me so sick that i puke (not nice emotionally or physically) and i havent got a clue why. same with teachers.
