I love learning how to draw Sonic so much that I can’t help doodle the little critter any chance I get. Whether I’m on the phone, on a bus, or watching tv, I’ll grab a pen and make doodles of Sonic, Dr. Robotnik, Tails, and the others.

A lot of people would love to know how to draw cartoon characters really well, but they think it’s just too hard or they’re not good enough. I don’t think this is the case, so I want to set the record straight in this article.

If you search online for tips on how to draw cartoon people then sooner or later you will find some of the following advise: -

  • You need to develop a good sense of proportions
  • You need to devote a lot of time for practicing
  • You need to have good imagination
  • You should try to perfect your skill of drawing nice lines and curves
  • You want to have a good eye for colours and shades

I agree that you need to have all these things to be a good artist, but I disagree that you should focus on them too much. As far as I’m concerned, there is something far more important than all of the above put together. My golden rule of learning how to draw Sonic to perfection is this; HAVE FUN!!

Here are my favourite ways to have fun with drawing cartoons:-

  • Draw in a group, club, or in the company of friends.
  • Carry my drawings in a portfolio and take them with me to show friends and relatives all the time.
  • Draw Sonic to music or while a Sonic DVD is playing in the background. That way you can more easily capture a sense of excitement in the drawing.
  • Get some really nice pens and pencils to draw with. (I personally love using magic markers.)
  • Share your drawings on forums and on Facebook groups so that you can make friends with other people with the same interest as you.
  • Buy a really cool comic and copy your favourite drawings as best you can (one of my favourite past times).

So long as you keep having fun, you are much more likely to carry on drawing for years and years. If you aren’t having much fun then you’ll probably give up, or your drawings won’t look as good because you won’t feel as creative.

Sharing the experience of drawing is the key to perfecting the skill of how to draw Sonic.

One of my favourite ways how to draw Sonic is to use my trusty mechanical pencil. Although any sort will do, I think that if you really love drawing, you should also love your pens.

Far and away the best mechanical pencil out there is the “Pentel Graph Gear 1000 0.5″. If treated will care will last for decades and the styling of it is sooo cool – it’s a design classic.

Caricature drawings concentrate on the feature that people notice first about the person. For President Kennedy, it was his hair; the cartoonists always drew that big black upswept black hair. For President Carter, it was that mouthful of huge teeth in a big grin. For President Bush, it was his eyebrows which went upward in the middle of his face instead of at the outer edges. For Obama, they stress his big ears and lips. If you look up these people online, you’ll see those features. Then look up cartoonist’s websites and see how they drew them. If you concentrate on what you notice most about the person, you’ll get there.

Start with reference photo’s. People say you shouldn’t draw from photo’s but when you’re just starting I think it’s beneficial. Pick a simple ones where; the person is looking straight at camera, there is a high contrast and they don’t have any facial hair. Start simple, find the basic shapes and do line drawings. DRAW WHAT YOU SEE. It is paramount in realistic drawing that you forget what you know about an object and draw what you can actually see! Practice until you can do this well.
Then start to add tone to the work. It won’t look 3D until it has tone. Pay special attention to all of the shadows and highlights on faces. If you want a drawing to be really realistic the end result shouldn’t have any lines, except maybe in the hair. There are no lines in real life instead create edges by using different tonal values. Work you way up until you feel confident enough to draw from life.

Only practice will make you break out of the style you currently have. I was the same …only doing manga and cartoon-like people. Go on the internet, find a photograph of someone/something you find interesting and draw it as realistically as you can. It’ll take more than one try.

Well first of all turning the paper when needing to draw somethign is perfecrtly normal. Many artists do it. But if it is really that much of a problem to you, than you just need to practice. Draw something on the right side, and then practice drawing it over and over again on the left side. The only way for you to get better at it is practice.

As for the actually drawing portion. Instead of focusing on anime characters, why not just focus on drawing people first. Anime is cool and all(heck, its what made me want to become an animator). But anime/manga style of art is not a good starting point.

Instead of trying to draw anime/cartoon characters go find some pictures online of real people and draw those. Keep practicing that until you become really good at that. By being able to draw real life human forms you will be able to pose them easy in anyway you want.

If you can master realism, then anime/cartoon style of art becomes 10x easier. If you were to look up the portfolios and artwork of any great anime/manga/comic artist, you will usually see they have artworks containing realism.

I know what your thinking though. Drawing real people is boring. I was like that at a young age too. But because I was only practicing to draw anime characters, I never got better, or learned anything. People always seem to forget that drawing isn’t just a skill, it’s an understanding of how things work. If i knew this back then, I would have been way better off.

It takes practice and it’s something that does not happen over night as you might already know. For tips you can go to your local art store. They should have some good "how to books." You can also take some figure drawing classes so you can learn how to lay out drawings before you start adding details.

Teachers and guest speakers have continuously talked about how we should figure out what we want to do, but for years, I have been confused.

I mainly do not know what kind of careers are out there, but my main interest is in art, especially drawing. (people, cartoon) I also do like digital mediums.

It’s just that my impression of careers in the art field is that they are really hard to get in to, and don’t pay that well either. However, it is something I enjoy very much.

On the other hand, I think about sciences or mathematics, but not specifically what. A lot of my family members are in the engineer field, and I think I am generally very good at math, but the idea of engineering doesn’t appeal to me.

So how can I figure out what kind of jobs are suited for me? Any help is appreciated, thank you.

My advice would be to attend job fairs and talk to the people that are actually looking for new employees. Ask them what the qualifies are and what the company offers.

Also, remember that the world is changing very quickly. There are jobs today that didn’t even exist 5 years ago. So, by the time you get out of college, it may be an entirely different world. So, you may want to be a little flexible about a future job.
