I love learning how to draw Sonic so much that I can’t help doodle the little critter any chance I get. Whether I’m on the phone, on a bus, or watching tv, I’ll grab a pen and make doodles of Sonic, Dr. Robotnik, Tails, and the others.

A lot of people would love to know how to draw cartoon characters really well, but they think it’s just too hard or they’re not good enough. I don’t think this is the case, so I want to set the record straight in this article.

If you search online for tips on how to draw cartoon people then sooner or later you will find some of the following advise: -

  • You need to develop a good sense of proportions
  • You need to devote a lot of time for practicing
  • You need to have good imagination
  • You should try to perfect your skill of drawing nice lines and curves
  • You want to have a good eye for colours and shades

I agree that you need to have all these things to be a good artist, but I disagree that you should focus on them too much. As far as I’m concerned, there is something far more important than all of the above put together. My golden rule of learning how to draw Sonic to perfection is this; HAVE FUN!!

Here are my favourite ways to have fun with drawing cartoons:-

  • Draw in a group, club, or in the company of friends.
  • Carry my drawings in a portfolio and take them with me to show friends and relatives all the time.
  • Draw Sonic to music or while a Sonic DVD is playing in the background. That way you can more easily capture a sense of excitement in the drawing.
  • Get some really nice pens and pencils to draw with. (I personally love using magic markers.)
  • Share your drawings on forums and on Facebook groups so that you can make friends with other people with the same interest as you.
  • Buy a really cool comic and copy your favourite drawings as best you can (one of my favourite past times).

So long as you keep having fun, you are much more likely to carry on drawing for years and years. If you aren’t having much fun then you’ll probably give up, or your drawings won’t look as good because you won’t feel as creative.

Sharing the experience of drawing is the key to perfecting the skill of how to draw Sonic.

One of my favourite ways how to draw Sonic is to use my trusty mechanical pencil. Although any sort will do, I think that if you really love drawing, you should also love your pens.

Far and away the best mechanical pencil out there is the “Pentel Graph Gear 1000 0.5″. If treated will care will last for decades and the styling of it is sooo cool – it’s a design classic.

This probably won’t make much money, but it’s the job for me (and plus I already have plans to have a side job as a pastry chef). I prefer to draw anime and write manga (Google it if you don’t know what I’m talking about), so any colleges in the U.S, Japan, or France will do for me ( don’t worry, I know how to speak all those languages). Thanks for your help!
Also, I have a high GPA (3.8) and money’s not an issue so any college works!

This is how the Japanese got their start in the Animation industry. Disney was a VERY(and still is) popular Animation company….look at how they draw their characters. Big eyes, pointy noses..etc. This was their competition/inspiration. If you look at old Japanese cartoons…it looks exactly like the Disney style. Throughout the years…the Japanese of course developed their own style which came from the Disney style. That’s where the big eyes came from. The different colored hair often represents the character’s personality or to just create a variety. If the cartoon actually takes place in Japan, like Azumanga Daioh, Beck or Samurai Champloo…the characters will typically have dark hair colors and such.

Is good that you know your strength now, so within 10 years, you’ll be an exceptional artist.

The best thing for you to do is just draw. The best you can. You don’t really need to know all the technical detail about drawing, those will come later as you grow older.

First thing you should focus on is draw a lot of different objects. For example: Pencil, T-shirt, Tea Cup, etc. These are the basic forms of things. As you get better at drawing, you can challenge yourself to add shadings, another words, lights, shadow, highlight, etc.

You can always start off by drawing humans. If this is your choice, do urge your parents to buy this book "Dynamic Figure Drawing" because it talks a lot of about drawing humans. There are thousand of images in the book to learn from. If you draw all of them out, you would definitely be very good.

To become an amazing artist, you have to draw a lot, for very long time. Good artist draw for 20 years before anyone notice them. So if you want to be good, start drawing now.

Now I’m considering getting back on track with that all and I’d like to specifically focus on character conceptual art for computer animations like what Pixar does (which is of course very general in terms of styles) but also Disney classic cartooning styles.

Are there places online or books that any of you have tried and trust to self-teach cartooning fundamentals and character conception from idea to finished product and also teach technique for a cartoonist?

Thanks for reading, any helpful advice or points in the right direction is greatly appreciated.

Also as a side note, I’m not looking for recommendations to go to school to learn it right now. It’s is unfortunately not a viable option right now, and not because of monetary reasons.

After thought: Obviously practice is a big issue and I will be working consistently to get back to the levels of drawing I used to have and beyond. Would it be better for me to start with simple cartooning styles and work my way up or is it more reasonable to practice the style I want to draw from the start?

Ok well you didn’t lose your talent you just kinda forgot its still there and once you draw a few pics it should resurface. (This happened to me a year ago I quit drawing then thought I lost it but it was still there)

I know Micheals or Hobby Lobby sell Disney & Pixar art books you could buy a couple and draw like they teach you & you could also get Disney and Pixar coloring books and see how they draw and draw buy eye…. (You know look at what they drew and then just copy it and see how it turns out!)

Lets see I would suggest getting The Animator’s Survival Kit by Richard Williams. Its a start. That will go over 2D Animation. To break down how 2D Animation is done basically its designing a character and having a lightboard and drawing it in a series of drawings that make it move. You don’t need a lightboard though if your good at drawing on the computer then I’d suggest you get a Wacom Tablet and either the programs Flash or ToonBoom. For 3D that’s going to be quite a bit harder to learn on your own but you can start by looking at the tutorials on Digital Tutors website. Although you don’t have to go to school for it I would highly suggest it. If you just do some searches online you’d be able to find some tutorials on how to do animation.
